The best time to visit the Morocco desert

A season-by-season guide to desert temperatures, quieter months and the kind of journey each time of year makes possible.

There is no single perfect month for the Sahara. The right moment depends on whether you want warm evenings, quiet dunes, crisp walking weather or a journey that fits around school holidays.

Spring brings comfortable days

From March into May, daytime temperatures around Merzouga are usually friendly for camel rides, village visits and time outside camp. The light is clear, the palms are green and evenings remain cool enough for a fire.

Spring is deservedly popular, so it helps to reserve private transport and preferred desert camps early. Wind can occasionally lift sand in March and April, but these episodes are normally short and simply part of the desert rhythm.

Autumn is warm without the summer peak

Late September through November is another excellent window. The strongest summer heat has passed, sunsets arrive at a comfortable hour and nights in the dunes are pleasant before winter cold settles in.

October can be busy on the classic Marrakech–Merzouga route. A slower four-day itinerary gives you more time in the valleys and avoids turning the road into a race.

Winter is beautiful—and genuinely cold at night

December, January and February often deliver bright skies and mild afternoons. They are wonderful months for photography and longer walks, but temperatures fall quickly after sunset and can approach freezing before dawn.

Pack warm layers and choose a camp with proper bedding. Summer travel is possible too, but activities should happen early and late in the day, with the hottest hours reserved for shade, rest and an air-conditioned vehicle.
